FISH IDENTIFICATION & INFORMATION RESOURCES
FishBase.org - FishBase is a comprehensive database of all known living fishes in the world. Various search options and tools are available to delve into the large database. https://www.calacademy.org/scientists/projects/catalog-of-fishes - Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes Online Database is the authoritative reference for taxonomic fish names. The online database is searchable, allowing users to see what species names are valid as well as those that are not.
inaturalist.org - iNaturalist is a citizen scientist database that is great for identifying your fishes! Biologists like me as well as other fish enthusiasts enjoy browsing photos of uploaded specimens to help people with identifications. This resource is also great for searching specific parts of the world and seeing what fishes live in those waters and being able to compare those populations vs. other regions. It’s free to join and submit your observations!
fishial.ai - Contribute to Fishial Recognition™️ by sharing your fish images with Fishial.AI! Fishial is attempting to build the biggest open-source code for AI fish identification. You can help them build their database by submitting your fish photos and using their online tool to label fish features. (So, yes — this will eventually make those often inaccurate AI fish-recognitions on your FishAngler and FishBrain apps much more precise.)
