Building a friendly moth trap is actually quite simple. All you really need is a light bulb producing short wavelength light. A black light will do you just fine. If you don’t have any netting, then just set up your black light in a cornered-nook on your porch and the moths will land on the walls.
Lepidopterists, those who study butterflies and moths, often use traps that capture and kill the specimens so they can analyze the nearby populations. If your collection is not contributing to science then what need is there to create a trap that kills?
